History

Modern Woodmen of America was founded in 1883 and was named in honor of the pioneering woodmen who cleared the forests to build homes and communities and to provide security for their families. Our founder, Joseph Cullen Root, formed a society harnessing the same spirit to clear away family financial difficulties.
While our founding mission has remained, our fraternal products and services have changed to meet the changing needs of Modern Woodmen Families.

Today

Today, we're one of the nation's largest fraternal life insurance societies with over three-quarters of a million members nationwide. Modern Woodmen is in the top 10 percent of all life insurance organizations in the United States, ranked by life insurance in force and assets.
Our representatives in 60 agencies and 125 districts across the country help market our products and services, and help provide a wide-range of fraternal benefits and activities.
